The formula, explained
Gross margin expresses gross profit as a share of sales. A selling price of 100 and product cost of 60 leave 40 in gross profit and a 40% gross margin. Markup uses cost as the denominator instead.
Example inputs: selling price 100; product cost 60. Result: 40 %.
What to check before using the result
Enter comparable amounts in one currency, using consistent tax treatment. Include the costs relevant to your calculation. Gross profit excludes costs you have not entered, so it is not automatically net business profit.
