How it works
Words use English word segmentation instead of a simple space count. Visible characters use grapheme clusters, so an emoji made of several Unicode characters can count as one visible character. UTF-16 units and UTF-8 bytes are shown separately for technical limits.
What to check before using the result
Editors and platforms can count hyphens, emoji and punctuation differently. Reading time assumes 200 words per minute; it is not a measurement of an individual reader. Nothing is saved after you leave.
